A proper immobilizer cannot be installed without proper tools, and training in automotive electronics. It is NOT a driveway job. One miscut, and your car may not start, may start only sometimes, may stop in the middle of nowhere, all kinds of unpleasant possibilities. You do realize an immobilizer is controlling ignition, fuel, and starter systems, I hope, and improper installation can make a car undriveable. Not to mention, a trained installer varies the installation from vehicle to vehicle, to make it harder for a thief to figure out what it is doing. Any amateur can crack a home-installed unit, and your car is gone. Besides, a home installation cannot be registered, and will have no warranty, not to mention will never qualify for an insurance discount in the areas, like Manitoba, that give one.
Now, if you get the basic unit that only controls one circuit, they are easy enough to bypass that you might as well not bother. Cars do not get stolen with the 3-circuit unit installed properly, they do get stolen with the single-circuit unit.|||dependes!!|||There are some models of immobilizers that fit between the ignition switch and the starter. These use small keychain fob RFID tags as the key. They are the easiest to install by the average car owner. The immobilizer unit will either be purchased as a kit for a specific model of car, or it will have an assortment of adapters for incorporating it into the preexisting wiring system. Installation requires paneling to be removed to gain access to the ignition wiring, as well as to mount the immobilizer unit to the car. Typically these are placed slightly below and towards the center of the car from the steering column.
As far as central locking is concerned, this type of immobilizer is unaffected, since it only touches the ignition system. After unlocking the immobilizer, the driver has a short period of time to turn on the ignition before the system automatically relocks. As long as the vehicle is fully started before the immobilizer is reactivated, the vehicle will keep running since the immobilizer only deactivates the engine starter, not the entire engine.
